After a long work-day a room filled up with business people and community members dedicating their evenings to attend the United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton’s 2011 Annual General Meeting.
Being my first United Way AGM I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would it be dull? Would it be stuffy and full of financial hoopla? I am happy to report to you now, the answer is, ‘no!’
The atmosphere was light, hopeful, and positive, but I suppose in a room full of people donating their time, money and energy to the community, how could it be anything but?
Throughout the evening I was fortunate enough to meet Board members, volunteers and even some of the faces behind all of the great work that is being done at the agencies who actively support those in-need in our communities.
During the AGM our outgoing Chair of the United Way Board of Directors, Tom Bontje was recognized, alongside some of the United Way’s outstanding volunteers. Each volunteer was introduced before receiving their award with a steady stream listing their achievements and the work they have done in the community; this left most of us in the audience wondering, “where do these people find the time to eat and sleep with all that they do?!”
At the United Way, our goal and passion is to support our communities, and we cannot thank such volunteers enough for their generosity, compassion and dedication as they help us reach our goals:
- Jim Barr Cumis Award: Debbie Mattina
- The Ray Johnson Memorial Award: Madeleine Levy
- 2011 Volunteer Excellence Award: Carmen Bian, Joanne Ruggieri and Linda Cupido
All in all it was a wonderful event that left me feeling inspired by the work that has been done and the work ahead, as we continue to support those in-need and help better our communities.
