On Thanksgiving Monday, October 10, 2011, nine participating Kings Buffet outlets, including – Brantford, Cambridge, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Owen Sound, Stratford and St. Thomas, joined forces to support the United Way.
With two sittings (lunch served 11:00am – 2:00pm and dinner served 4:00 – 8:00pm) the Thanksgiving meal was offered at a special (very special) price of only 99 cents per person, with all proceeds going to each restaurants local United Way.
An estimated crowd of over 3,000 arrived at the Stoney Creek location, with a line wrapped around the building throughout the day.
“This event was initially held as a fundraiser for the United Way,” said United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton’s Marketing and Communications Director, Janyce Robinson. “What we were so touched to discover was that it was so much more than that. A woman came up to me and told me her family would have gone hungry on Thanksgiving if it wasn’t for this event.”
There were individuals simply there to enjoy a great meal at a great price, but there were also individuals counting out dimes, nickels and pennies in order to afford their meal. The powerful result was everyone, regardless of their income or life situation, was empowered with the ability to donate and give back to their community.
Across the nine restaurants, $29,880 was raised, with $5,000 raised at the Stoney Creek location, in support of United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton.
“The greater our collective action, the greater the impact we can make,” said Len Lifchus, United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton’s CEO. “United Way works to create lasting change in our community. We are thankful for partners, like the Kings Buffet for taking the lead and helping us as we work to help others.”
