Acclaim Health’s “Friendly Visiting Program” – bringing smiles, improving lives
Fran has been a part of the Friendly Visiting Program through Acclaim Health since 1994. In 1981 Fran was in a terrible accident that left her in a coma for six months. Since the accident Fran has had health problems and troubles getting around without being in pain.
Once a week Fran and her friendly visitor spend quality time together. They go on many outings such as shopping, lunch, and walks by the lake for ice cream. Many days have been spent sewing and doing crafts. Anything the two do is always accompanied by laughter. When asked what the program means to her, Fran passionately states,
“It has made me feel good about living.”
St. Joseph’s Villa – enhancing Seniors’ health and well being
The Adult Day Program at St. Joseph’s Villa is a social, recreational, physically stimulating program that is constantly adapting to meet the needs of seniors and the disadvantaged. A variety of programs are offered with a focus on the maintenance of cognitive and physical functioning.
One of the most popular parts of the program is the United Way funded SIM Gym which provides the chance for all the participants to remain active.
Bee, Al, Victor and Ken are weekly participants and all three confirm that the program gives them all something to look forward to and the chance to get out of the house to socialize. Accessible social and recreational activities help keep seniors physically and mentally well and the Adult Day Program is an excellent example of how United Way is supporting programs to help increase the participation of seniors in recreational, social and daily activities.
