Volunteer Spotlight: Sam Ro

Sam Ro graduated from McMaster University in 2004 with a degree in Engineering Physics. Upon graduation, he joined L-3 Wescam where he has been for the last nine years, currently working as a Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor within Operations. He has a passion for giving back to the community through organizations like the United Way and Living Hope Church in Hamilton. He is the Employee Campaign Chair for L-3 Wescam and also sits on the United Way Burlington Cabinet. When Sam isn’t at work, he enjoys spending time with wife and their three young children.

We were lucky to find a moment to sit down with this amazingly busy volunteer of ours to talk to him about his life and passion for giving back…

How do you start your day?
My mornings are pretty exciting – I have three children, a 4 year old, a 2 year old and a 5 month, so the morning is pretty chaotic trying to get everybody prepared for the day! Luckily my wife is on maternity leave so she does a lot of the heavy lifting, but together we get the kids ready, pack lunches, all of that sort of thing. It’s a pretty simple morning routine, but it’s busy.

Being such a busy person, how do you find the time and energy to donate?
I’ve got a fantastic wife – she supports me in everything I do. Being involved in the things that I do, my work and volunteering, it can put a bit of a strain on her because she is there supporting me every step of the way and helping with our kids and all of the things they have going on. We have been together since we were 16 – high school sweethearts – so we know each other inside and out and I rely on her heavily for that energy. I also make a point to pick and choose things to become involved in things that I am passionate about. I firmly believe that if you’re passionate about something, you don’t need to find the energy, it’s just there. I don’t have a lot of free time, so I want to make sure that whatever I invest that time into, it’s something I enjoy doing.

What are you most proud of or feel is a strength of yours?
I think I’m a good Dad and I love it. After working a full day at L-3 Wescam, which I also love doing, I have the second job of being a father right afterwards and it’s something that means so much to me. I try to as involved as I can – it’s not like I go home and turn on the TV, because my kids are at home waiting for me.

With everything you have going on – what helps you relax?
In all honesty what helps me relax is investing in people, whether that be my kids, whether it be the employees that work for me or whether that be with my volunteer work. Ultimately that’s why I decided to join the Burlington Campaign Cabinet and volunteer with the United Way. Of course it creates more work and makes my life crazy busy, but in a lot of ways that kind of relaxes me because I get a lot of fulfilment from it. Just knowing that I’m making a difference with the people around me is comforting.

Thank you Sam for all you do for the United Way and our community. We would not be able to create positive change in Burlington and Hamilton without volunteers like you!
