Who We Help

Every year United Way touches the lives of thousands of individuals and families in our communities by giving them renewed hope for the future. Our impact in Burlington and Greater Hamilton is not only measured by the number of people we’ve helped, but also the stories of those we’ve touched along the way.

Because of the generosity of our donors, we are proud to say that in Greater Hamilton in 2009, we invested over $3,494,280 in more than 90 programs, projects, partnerships and community initiatives through more than 49 community organizations. In the City of Burlington, we invested over $1,214,171 in more than 44 programs, projects, partnerships and community initiatives through more than 23 organizations.

Ensuring your investment has the greatest possible impact

For over 80 years, United Way has been contributing to the strength of our community and its citizens. As the community grows and changes, United Way is keeping pace. In this complex and dynamic environment we seek not only to support vital frontline programs and services but to develop and support broader community solutions by working in partnership with each level of government and with all sectors.

These partnerships are based on a shared vision of a strong, healthy and safe community for all. In support of this vision, we are actively involved in important community-wide initiatives such as the Poverty Roundtable, From Here to the Bay, the Halton Healthy Community Fund and the Building Vibrant Neighborhoods Initiative.

Developing effective solutions to issues affecting community requires a thorough understanding of current and emerging socio-economic trends.

At United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton we started with conducting research into where we are as a community, and where we are heading. We followed this research with a community consultation and both tools have helped to identify areas where we know we can make a difference.

With this knowledge, we identified three priority areas -- our Investment Priorities. They are: Supporting Seniors, Poverty Prevention and Reduction; and Strengthening Neighborhoods.

Through a comprehensive Citizens Review Process, dozens of local volunteers spend thousands of hours each year evaluating financial and program outcome information to make sure your gift is making a measurable difference in our community.

As such, while our work continues to evolve and change, one thing remains constant: our promise to you that your investment will go where it is needed most and where it will have the greatest impact.
